This is one of the best organized events by PCA, I'd highly recommend this at a perfect spring time at VIR.

Btw, which day do you prefer to have dinner, Thursday on arrival day or Friday to share first track stories?
Also, where, Tavern or New Mexican?

I'm in. Will be the first time getting the 3 on the track, so I'm looking forward to it. Way more power then the 993. Also will be the first time back to VIR in 4 years, boy time flies by if you let it!!!.

I would vote for Friday, since we could be getting in late on Thursday.

I believe I am in black, not certain as the registration site does not show the run groups. I am in black in my region though.

Signed up in black. I normally run in Red with Potomac. But first time with the 3 on the track and haven't been to VIR in 3+ years, I figured I didn't really care what group I ran in. Hopefully I can keep up, I can't say it's the car anymore ;).

Just slide under the wire as our anniversary is on the 26th.

Oh c'mon, we'll buy the wine for you both. She hasn't been to the track at all this year and the CS is crying. We'll leave you guys alone enough for it to be a new beginning for the tracking family :D

Hopefully I can keep up, I can't say it's the car anymore ;).

Todd, I am very glad you'll be there and in black, hopefully I'll be as well, which will be cool to run together with Scott, and then we'll all get rides with Dell in Red

But we really need to adjust your attitude: we can ALWAYS blame the car!!! Haven't you seen the problem reports lately? And now Trakcar added "difficult to shift out" problem, so our problem rolodex is getting nicer by the day ;)

All restaurants state they don't need reservation, "just come and we'll accommodate." So, dinner is set for Friday, we'll decide on the place and time once we are there.

You can spot me by looking for a white GT3 (there will at least be another one, Todd's), I will carry the #5.

I am looking forward to running with and meeting you all.

I am sure you all got the email from Kevin, but in case you missed it, the confirmations are complete, car numbers are assigned (I got #5, save me couple of stickers :)). The bad news is black group has 57 drivers and red 53. Even for VIR that is quite a lot, I hope people will be good with open passing without being too aggressive. The good news, there are about two dozen GTs :)

Not sure what your experience has been, but when I have run with FSR in the past (in White), the groups have always been big but there have been very few problems. I would hope in Black and Red with the improved situational awareness that the flow isn't too compromised. I'll just keep my arm pointed out the window when I see you guys coming...:D

Should be a blast, regardless.

I hope people will be good with open passing without being too aggressive.

I'll just keep my arm pointed out the window when I see you guys coming..

I've heard good things about FSR, so hopefully everyone will cooperate.

I ran in both red and black at the Zone 2 event in March. I am trying not to come across as being too negative but black had issues. The group had a lot of cars and several cars seemingly refused to give passing signals. Painful to say, but I saw the same train of cars in several run sessions. I have some video where there were 5-6 car trains for 6 laps in the row, so basically half the session......:-(( Moreover, the real concern was the resulting aggressive driving. A lot of drivers were getting frustrated, piling up in corners, weaving back and forth and ultimately passing without signals. Same old story, a "group of drivers" running at a similar pace not giving way to faster cars that are stuck behind them.

Red on the other hand was the complete opposite. Early and predictable passing signals even when you approached a group drivers that you know were working hard to stay with each other. Great flow with a lot of cars.

05-10-2011, 10:12 AM
If this happens again, I think most of us, at least myself and Dell, will definitely pull into the hot pits and make it known that it should be addressed; there is absolutely no reason for that in Black.

If a driver doesn't have the SA to recognize faster cars coming through, then they are in the wrong run group...plain and simple..and its not about ego either; I've pointed by much slower cars than me before, often! :D

bman
05-10-2011, 10:27 AM
will definitely pull into the hot pits

I've pointed by much slower cars than me before, often! :D

Yeah, my own fault for hanging in there for 6 laps :beatinghead: Others hit the pits and looked for space while I stayed the optimist thinking this can't go on much longer......

Me too. Anyone in my rear view is getting a point....well except for FTS of course:ballkicked:. Passing someone back is great fun!

FTS
05-10-2011, 10:37 AM
As if I needed a point by from you; do I need to repost how you took off on the back straight? :D

Larry is not exaggerating with his screen name, "Landjet."

I also agree with Scott. If we run into issues, I will be a little more forthcoming to the drivers personally first, then to the chief if it persists. I actually generally enjoy the traffic more so than open track, keeps my concentration up. Traffic becomes an issue when the speed differences are too high. In red during Zone 2, although there were quite a number of cars, the speed differences weren't huge, and as Bman mentioned, drivers were better with situational awareness.

I just made to the hotel 30 mins ago, this has been a very long two days :( Although, still not as bad as Todd's.

Thursday AM --> take son to school for his finals, on the way back, get pulled over for expired registration, receive $70 ticket, not including the missing front lisence plate (stupid me, forgot to renew and temp reg. :beatinghead:)

Thursday AM/PM --> start two new projects with hard deadlines, no time to loose, put teams together, talk with customer, write PMPs, etc., etc., and etc. Get home at 10 pm.

Friday AM --> make calls to friends for an emergency state inspection. However, rotors have to be replaced. Make more calls begging dealer to find front rotors, Tysons Porsche finds them and brings them from another dealer, schedules replacement.

Friday AM --> Take son to school for more finals, change wheels

Friday noon --> Make it to Roger (Authotherapy), he finds his friend to do the state inspection, 2 hours later I am out to MVA.

Friday 2 pm --> Make it to MVA, long lines, 1 hour later, I have a new reg and sticker.

Friday 3:30 pm --> make it to dealer, starving, they take the car, tech comes (GT3 specialist, Thomas), starts work. I walk a mile to find a sandwich, a bad one at that.

Friday 5:30 pm --> Rotors changed, brakes flushed, wheels greased and torqued, all happy, pay bill, hit the road to VIR with smiles.

Friday 7:00 pm --> still haven't made to out of Metro DC area due to rush hour traffic. Finally hit US29, keep cursing at all the lights, they all turn red when they see me.

Friday 8:30 pm --> cruising nicely on US29, a Bimmer comes next to me, accelerating/decelerating trying entice me, I don't budge for 10 miles. Finally, he is stuck behind traffic, so I accelerate to open a gap... over the hill... COP! too late. Receive ticket for $51 and loose 20 mins, Bimmer passes by.

Friday 11:00 pm --> make it to Danville, find a McDonalds and get a sandwich, as bad as I remember, wash car in self-service, check into the hotel.

Saturday 00:00 --> make coffee, turn on computer and relax; have to wake up at 5 am. I am REALLY looking forward to a new day at the track tomorrow.

Good night

I am so glad that Scott made the Saturday and Sunday, although we almost never found one another on the track except few brief periods, we must have been running about the same pace on opposite sides of the track.

I hope we'll get to do this soon again. I will follow up a video, hopefully, but now I have catch up to work.

Dell, great to meet you too! Wish we had more time together but it was a busy weekend for everyone. Next time....

The smoke was scary! I was car #2 to go through it and prayed that the car in front of me didn't stop or move over. 0 visibility is frightening especially at 100+ mph. Yeah, 5 laps was all I got in the GT2 thanks to a hole in the radiator. I was fortunate to discover it and not dump coolant on the track or damage the car.

Luckily I had my wife's Cayman S to drive. I had an absolute blast! I'd forgotten how much fun that car is to drive. There were several cars in my group that were running similar lap times and we were really going at it. To my surprise, I broke into the 2:14's. It was exhausting and my leg's bruised from bracing myself in the 3 point belts.

My quick write up on my weekend :) (link (http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/996-gt2-gt3-forum/635031-can-a-mk1-gt3-bumper-fit-on-a-mk2-gt3.html)) +1 to Dell's comment; great to finally meet the 'register' guys.

Here's the video. I accidentally dropped the resolution too low when I exported it for Vimeo. If you look closely you can see that "BOOM" halfway up the back straight as I start down the back out of Oak Tree. I gave you a point just a bit earlier in the lap so you must have been right there when it happened! It was so thick we couldn't see driving through and I was so worried there could be a car stuck on track. All I could think of was Days of Thunder and having to pull some serious Cole Trickle move :-DDD

Here are a couple of laps Sunday morning in the Cayman S. I ran some 2:14's Saturday and assumed they were my best but Sunday morning I ran a few laps in the 13's :D I am surprised by my times considering the tires were trashed and I knew this was my last session of the weekend; i.e. I wasn't pushing my luck.

It's strong evidence that I need a data logger. Looking at the quickest lap, a 2:13.17, my speeds through T3, entering the esses, T10, Oak Tree and entering Hog Pen are ALL a few MPH lower than other laps and yet it's my quick lap. HUH???

It's strong evidence that I need a data logger. Looking at the quickest lap, a 2:13.17, my speeds through T3, entering the esses, T10, Oak Tree and entering Hog Pen are ALL a few MPH lower than other laps and yet it's my quick lap. HUH???

I know it sounds odd, but by going slower you can actually go faster. Sure we can go into a corner fast but can we control it and more importantly exit. It's all about corner exit speed.

Obviously this doesn't apply to every corner but there is a "perfect" speed to will result in the fastest sector time. This is where data comes into play. By trying different lines, entry speeds, etc, etc, etc, we can learn which approach actually works best.

Next time we are at an event together let's make sure and find a session or two to jump in each car:pals:

Nicely done Brian. I tried a few different approaches to gaining speed this weekend and found that I was slower when trying to go faster in some spots, and/or my comfort level was lower, so I went slower; some of it had to do with set up, most of it had to do with 'attachments'. :) In any case, great times!

If I don't lift anywhere and the throttle continues to go down out of the corner after going of the brake and on the gas, I set my best sector times.

Exceptions are T1 at VIR for example, where I lift to tuck/rotate the car, but I think it applies to 90% of the corners.

To go reasonable fast on a new track, I just focus on that. Of the brake means throttle must continue to go down and stay down untill braking. I spend most time on that with non beginner students as well.

Man that is a cracking time!!!

Thanks! But this is bad news for you! Now I need your help in learning how to analyze data :pals:

I've heard this many times but it's never worked for me in the past. If I tried to drive slower/smoother my times would increase. In this case, I am shocked that my time dropped A LOT, almost 2 seconds! So, without a doubt you're right!

Absolutely! Thanks for the offer!

I think you're spot on here. "Comfort in transistioning off brake" Pushing hard often results in slowing the car too much because you're not comfortable. Another surprise was my cool down lap where I noticed that I came through T10 (Southbend) 5 mph faster than normal because I didn't brake at all!! Yet I was VERY comfortable.

If I don't lift anywhere and the throttle continues to go down out of the corner after going of the brake and on the gas, I set my best sector times.
Of the brake means throttle must continue to go down and stay down untill braking.

Agreed, this is what I've been working on too and have seen positive results. I wish I had data to support it but I am assuming the lower entry speeds allow me to apply the throttle earlier compared to when I am pushing hard into the corners.

Scott, I finally got the time to watch your vid from Friday with the off, and I think the reason was at that specific lap you just went in too hot in to Hog Pen, in fact 6 mph faster than your previous laps. I don't think your tires can handle an entry speed of 69 there, I know mine can't.

Sent you a PM; not sure what video you are watching??

Fast lap (8) on Friday, turn in speed was 65; off lap (9) on Friday, turn in speed was 67.

I've reviewed the video hundreds of times at this point, and that night with Dell as well, and we concluded that my line was a little off, in addition to my initial correction being too large, then a other correction being too much, combined with me dropping a wheel off, spinning the car 180 too quickly for me to catch.

So speed may have been a factor, but IMO, I should have:
recognized I was getting loose on lap 8 and dialed it back a notch :beatinghead:
caught it with better form (like lap 8) :beatinghead: :beatinghead:

Lesson learned :)

You may be right, but unless we push our limits a little, we'll be stuck at a platau and won't be able to advance our techniques. I agonize over so many details as well and eventually slow myself down. One my observations about my own driving has been that I post my fastest times when I feel the car is too loose.

Since I realized that, I try to setup my tire pressures in the rear a little higher than what I think they should be. For example, when front to rear pressure difference is less 2 psi, i can comfortably post mid teen times. However, if rears are 3-4 psi higher, my time get closer to low teens and even 2:10-11 range.

This is not a discussion of pressures of course, I am just trying to make the point that unless we get lose a little and be comfortable with controlling the car when its lose, we won't get to sub 10s IMHO.

So, if I were you, what would I do differently? Nothing. I think you're driving was really superb in those videos, relaxed, determined and bold, and I envy such driving attitude.
