Re: Mancation II Drive North, or ship car to CA?

To give you an idea how hard Road America is on brakes and tires, my tire pressure gain is over 14psi from cold in a 25 minute session. I am very sure it will only go up the longer I'm out there.

Re: Mancation II Drive North, or ship car to CA?

Sorry, my sentence was a bit confusing. I assumed South Course. A good basis for comparison is a well driven Cup car time.

At Road America a lot of time can be gained in the Carousel. FYI, on...

Re: Mancation II Drive North, or ship car to CA?

FYI Cup cars go 1.30.xx on the South course which is what I assume you drove.

Don't bother with the Ostoff bar, go to Siebkins. Lots of racing history there, just look at the stickers all over...

Re: How To Brake?

Well, I think part of the problem is how HPDE teaches people how to brake- usually an A/X brake zone exercise. That does nothing to actually promote feel of the braking, although it teaches the...

Re: How To Brake?

Hmm... kind of a loaded question...

I touched upon this at rennlist- http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/racing-and-drivers-education-forum/641274-brake-rotors-and-pads-help-2.html

But the...

Re: How To Brake?

I also see a lot of exit pinching. What I've noticed as a beginner's symptom is usually apexing too early. Many overly enthusiastic novice drivers begin their turn in too soon. You rarely see this...

Re: How To Brake?

No big deal. Everyone has to learn from somewhere. There are lots of people far more experienced than me. I've only been racing karts for about 7 years.

Kart setup is not easy.

First and...

Re: How To Brake?

The setup is magnified by the type of racing- road racing a kart is really a study on not only driving ability but also setup- both are required to be competitive. What's really important in road...

Re: How To Brake?

So last weekend I tried to shake off the rust and go racing at Mid Ohio.

The driving part was fine. Unfortunately the chassis and engine tuning side of it was a complete disaster. Things started...

Re: How To Brake?

Mid Ohio and Grattan are the two most technical tracks in the Upper Midwest and the most fun to drive. I would put either of those up there with Barber, Road Atlanta, and Laguna Seca as technically...

Re: For csmarx- road racing karting primer

You guys would be surprised how many big names came through road racing karting. A lot of Indycar guys came through there in the past, as did some NASCAR guys and IMSA/GA racers. Currently we have...

For csmarx- road racing karting primer

csmarx-

Road racing karting is quite different than sprint karts. We race on big tracks such as Road America, Barber, Daytona, etc. The speeds are much higher than sprint, and races last between...

Re: How To Brake?

Christian-

I can probably discuss this on another thread, that is quite a bit off topic and although some of my posts have been on the periphery of the subject, a discussion just on karts and...

Re: Pretty proud of myself...

Quick note-

Here's a 20 minute vid of me at Road America. Sorry for the bad lighting, my fault, didn't configure the camera right- put it on center weighted metering instead of spot metering.

Re: How To Brake?

At the Keyhole we go to threshold brake immediately (braking in a straight line after the chicane), then turn in after braking is complete, apexing twice around the turn, riding the concrete patch...

Re: How To Brake?

That's a function of how large you need the traction circle to be at whichever end you need it at most.

For some corners like at Road America's Carousel, a long sweeping slightly downhill...

Re: How To Brake?

For what it's worth that is the exact way I have to brake at T1 at Road America. The faster the speed, the more important you don't upset the car, especially if it's bucking like a bronco at 170mph!

Re: Pretty proud of myself...

I was only there Friday and Saturday. There were a couple of real bad violators of the mirror/point by policy- on Friday it was a silver Turbo S with a younger guy driving Daddy's car in S-2 (3!!!...

Re: Pretty proud of myself...

Thanks FTS, appreciate the acknowledgement!

I liken the car's handling to a big school bus- it's a lot longer, you have to wait for the chassis to settle down, and the steering ratio is abysmal! ...

Re: How To Brake?

Obviously if you stay within the traction circle you won't lose any traction, but to stay within that circle requires you to not exceed the chassis capabilities- those capabilities determine the size...

Pretty proud of myself...

So as the title suggests, I'm quite proud of myself.

A couple of weekends ago I participated in the PCA Chicago region RADE (Road America DE). Started in the novice group because I had never...

Re: How To Brake?

Smoother IS faster. What's also faster is keeping the wheel straight for as long as possible as opposed to having some steering input. And having little or to no toe either front or rear (keeps the...

Re: Mancation II Drive North, or ship car to CA?

Gosh, Autobahn will be the worst track on that list- that's saying something!

The rest of the list looks AWESOME. You guys will have a LOT of fun at the others- RA has a lot of high speed stuff,...

Re: DE, Why Bother?

Probably the most important point of the post in my opinion.

I race karts- situps and a bit of laydown, in the WKA NRRS (National Road Race Series). At the speeds we go in that series we are very...
